Thank goodness for small favors

We still have our window air conditioner in, which is allowing us to sleep comfortably while the temps are elevating. Our home seems to be quite good at holding in heat, which is a good news/bad news kind of situation.

Words last night were perfunctory. I got to my writing group not in the mood to write, but to help someone with their projects for the evening. By the time I was done helping (perilously close to midnight), I was simply exhausted. I made my character as frustrated with their situation as I currently am (seriously, I seem unable to write this man out of a cardboard box), and told him he shouldn’t put up with my ineptitude anymore.

Today’s writing should go better.

Yesterday I took a half day off of work to come home and sleep in preparation for Tuesday and Wednesday when I will be unable to take a similar break if I needed it. I’m feeling pretty good now, though, so that’s a bonus.

I’m having some very strange (for me) breakfast food, although it’s essentially oatmeal. I’ve let myself run out of the things that have become staples over the past month – kale, romaine, cucumber – and so all I’ve got is chia seeds, oatmeal, frozen bananas, and some almond milk. There’s also an abundance of dried blueberries, which are making the oatmeal very chewy, even though they soaked overnight. It definitely drove me to use the oatmeal that’s just been hanging in my panty, so that was good. I’m looking forward to picking up some of the things I’m out of, though, because I miss my smoothies.

Last night I barely wrote, and I must confess, I’m really having a hard time with that. I have a long fantasy piece that’s around 47,000 words that I don’t know how to finish. I estimate I’m about 2/3 through it, and I need to have that big breakthrough that will send me on an avalanche of word production. I just don’t know what that is, and that’s frustrating.

I have been publishing some short stories through a pen name, and that’s not going well either. I shouldn’t expect to see results in a month – that’s not unheard of, but I’m also doing it part time and am not doing the level of marketing I should be to get 30-day results. So the frustration with a lack of results is slowing down the ideas there as well.

I’m not giving up, though. Today I’m going to try for 2,000 words at my writing group, hopefully in a new short for my pen name. It’s more important that I keep those going than finishing the longer fantasy piece I mentioned because, in that genre, production is key. If I can get an entire short story finished today, that would be amazing.

Wish me luck.

Productive In Spite Of

Yesterday went well for being kind of miserable. I wrote a few words, but not nearly as much as I would like for an unsick day. Fortunately, it was a sick day, so I’m happy I wrote.

Quite honestly, I’m feeling rather irritated that I didn’t manage any words Saturday. I wasn’t bothered when it happened, and I gave myself permission to not get anything done. But when I’m thinking about it now, I should have made a point to get on and write 50 words, or 500 words. I can do that rather quickly, and it would have just taken a little bit of planning.

I’m going to keep it in mind for next time I have something big planned.

Here’s the point of the post where I’m very happy that I take notes daily on what I did that day. Last week I published under my pen name on Tuesday, I went to my regular Tuesday write/edit group, went to two school open houses for the Youths, and made it through a full week of work.

I wrote a bit less than the week before, but 9 of 38 (I just realized the graphic is wrong – I’m not fixing it now) is not bad at all. I’m pleased and looking forward to making this week another #1 week.

It’s over

The big event is done with, it was a success, and we’re just dealing with the usual “day after” kind of things now. Tomorrow I return a piece of rented equipment, we make up some of the extra food, etc.

I didn’t have time to either post or write yesterday at all, which is disappointing, but I knew it would be hard. I’m also battling one of those colds you get when you work too much and don’t rest enough. Please forgive me if I’ve ranted on and on about that over the past few days. I’m a little fuzzy in the head right now.

So since I skipped yesterday entirely in all respects, let me review Saturday.

I think these were Laundry words, squeezed in between the two loads I did that evening. Perfunctory words, to show that I was able to write even when I didn’t feel top notch.

Those are the kind of words I probably would have ground out yesterday, but I simply didn’t have time.

So today was more laundry and then a lot of sleeping and some medicine, and then some adorable cats. It’s always best to end a day with adorable cats.

Almost There

I wish I could say the post title relates to my story. Instead, it relates to Saturday. It’s all about Saturday this week.

Except for yesterday, it was also about an alternator.

Moderate words written. I was aiming for more like 1,700, but this is good. I went to bed early. I plan to duplicate that this evening.

I hope everyone is having a lovely week and being productive and safe and healthy.

Busy Wednesday

Wednesday is one of those words I pronounce slowly in my head as I spell it. There are some last names like that, too, and February, of course. I’m trying to think of others, but can’t right now.

Yesterday’s words were low because I spent my prime writing time (morning) publishing. Then in the evening was a school event that took two hours, and by the time I got home I was quite exhausted. It took me two hours to get to the point where I could write those 134 words, and then I just went to bed. I hope to do better today, but my standards are considerably lower until next week.

Once the work event is lower, I will be free to do more. Until then I’ll do as much as I can when I can and not beat myself up about it.

Like a bull in a dish shop

We’re charging ahead come hell or whatever other crap life throws our way. (My issues are not weather related, and with the recent flooding for those in the path of Harvey or Irma, “high water” seemed insensitive.)

I am doggedly back behind the keyboard after a rough start yesterday that dissipated sometime around four o’clock in the afternoon. Today will be busy if nothing else. There are a lot of errands to do and not a ton of time to get them done. Plus, I’d like to finish a project before heading out, and I’m not certain if it will be on the time schedule of the person I need to leave with.

We do what we can with what we have and we do our best.

Yesterday, the words were good. I wrote a lot of them, all for one story, which makes it a bit longer than its predecessors, but still, within the range I wanted. I look forward to getting it up for sale this morning (fingers crossed) so that I can head out to work after my shower and not take writing time this morning so I can finish that previously mentioned task.

I’m tired. Also, haven’t heard from a couple of friends in a while so I feel it necessary to poke them through electronic means and make sure they’re OK. Such a week.

I’m having a rough time getting up and moving this morning. Apparently, I missed my alarm somehow, even though it’s backed up by my Fitbit and usually, the combination is enough to jolt me out of bed. This morning DH needed to say something to get me out of bed.

Well, I’m here now.

I wrote a bit yesterday, though not as much as I intended.

Today I’d like to simply set a goal to repeat that number. Finishing the short story I started Sunday seems like almost too much to ask.

Have a lovely Tuesday, everyone!

I don’t mention much about politics or world news here. It’s a blog for me and my writing, and I don’t always remember, to be honest. But today is Patriots Day, the day of remembrance in the US of the victims of the September 11th, 2001 terror attacks. I’ll be thinking of everyone affected today.

I’m also keeping the people who were/are in the path of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. I have family and friends in Florida and I’m keeping them in mind and heart as their storm continues through the state.

Now, on to words.

Sundays are turning into my best writing days. Part of me still thinks that I should be able to write at least that much on Saturday, but I haven’t quite managed it yet. That’s okay, Sunday is making up for it.

I killed it again this week. Yesterday was my best writing day for September. The week was my best writing week for the year (by 42 words, which totally still counts). I published three short stories and got a newsletter more or less up and running for my pen name (thank you, Labor Day, for the extra writing/working time).

So all in all, it was an excellent week.

This week is considerably busier. There’s that super large work event Saturday, they’re now calling for rain that day, and because I won’t be doing laundry all day, I’m likely going to have my weekend writing thrown into a tailspin because my routine will be blended into an unrecognizable rushed mash.

So if my next week isn’t quite as good, we’ll know why.

Anxious for time to pass

There’s a large event coming up in my life next week and I’m anxious for the time to pass until next Sunday because then it will be over. I expect it will be a huge relief to have it over and done with, and I look forward to that time.

Until then, I’m trying to focus on writing and publishing and research. There’s that anxiety poking at the back of my brain for the weekend, but I’m trying (and failing) to ignore it.

Words for yesterday were low, as you can see. I ended up doing much less work and much more relaxing with Minecraft and a couple movies – The Dressmaker and Cinderella. It was nice, though. I’m glad I took the time to rest my brain.

Now I’m off to write. I hope it doesn’t suck. 🙂
