Wake Up

303 fiction words, 721 total words

Day two of waking when I want instead of when the alarm tells me I’m out of time. I had some crazy dreams this morning, though. I don’t remember them particularly well, thankfully.  (Yep. What I do remember is creepy enough that I don’t want to remember more.)

Writing was frustrating last night. I feel stuck, or lost, or out of ideas, or unable to write myself out of this corner. I am confident that it’s a result of my short writing sessions. When I’m only able/take the time to write 300 words or so, it’s impossible to get any momentum. So this is a problem of my own making and would, quite likely, be remedied by turning off the damn television when everyone goes to bed.

Better than yesterday, but I’m still not happy. Will try again today.

Reasonable Hours

178 fiction words, 363 total words

Everyone’s definition of reasonable hours of wake and sleep are different. DH goes to bed around 8 p.m., while I prefer later hours, like midnight. The youths have had a 9 p.m. bedtime for ages, but Junior Youth is developing a distinct preference for later hours with no ill effects, so we can work with that.

I was right when I guessed why I was having trouble sleeping/waking. Well, at least my theory was proved by one night of testing. (Not very scientific, I realize.) I didn’t have any soda, actually, at all yesterday, and I purposefully didn’t have one once I got home (which I wanted, desperately). Getting to sleep was a snap, as usual, which was a relief.

The other thing I did last night was that I deleted all of my alarms except the 8 a.m. one and the 6 a.m. one I keep for everyone else. Technically, I kept the 5 a.m. one, too, in hopes I can get back to early mornings because those are wonderfully productive. But just knowing I didn’t have those alarms available easily helped me get up. I did hit snooze several times, but snooze on one alarm is vastly different than snooze on four.

Hopefully, a side effect of getting up close to the hour I want is more productivity. Yesterday was not a productive writing day at all. I got to our writing/editing group and had nothing. Something has changed for me there, but it’s hard to put my finger on it.

I’ll sort it out eventually, I’m sure. For now, words.

Sleep/Wake

530 fiction words, 818 total words

I’m not only having trouble getting to sleep the past couple of days, but I’m having trouble waking as well. The getting to sleep part is unusual because sleep is my superpower. I can sleep anywhere, nearly any time.

I’ve also developed a habit of drinking a soda after 8pm. So that might have something to do with it.

The waking part has been an issue since school got out and I no longer have to wake at 6 a.m. to get the youths ready. I know I feel better when I have more morning before my day starts, so I just need to get past this stupid “wake up” thing. It would benefit my writing, too. So tonight, perhaps, bed at a reasonable hour (10 p.m.) with less soda (no soda) and less visual stimulation. I might be able to hack it with no TV at all if I get home after everyone else is in bed.

Oh yes, I wrote yesterday, too. Not as much as I want to see, but more than usual.

Before the storm

WordPress is telling me the editor is new on my phone, but I’m not at all sure that I can tell. In the meantime, enjoy this photo of clouds before the thunderstorm.

Back to Real Life

Not that what I was living for the past week and a half or so wasn’t “real”, but it was vacation, and then after that for four days it was the “ideal”. I got a lot done in terms of publication, and I have a renewed determination for writing, so there’s that.

601 fiction words, 886 total words

I feel kind of “off the rails” with the words right now, but usually, that happens before I find the story again. It will be obvious to first readers, and then I’ll fix it.

This is only the past week, which means one weekly review got missed in the travels. Oh well! For being a week on vacation, this wasn’t a bad one. I pulled the writing computer out at least once a day every day I was gone (with maybe one exception) and hacked out a few hundred words, and maybe less once or twice, and it was good. Clearly not my best, but also not my worst.

Here are my monthly totals so far:

July fiction total: 7,281
June fiction total: 10,577
May fiction total:
6,107
April fiction total:
15,814
March fiction total:
 12,576
February fiction total: 9,217
January fiction total: 18,615
2017 fiction total: 80,187

I am now officially doing better than my worst month. This is good! I also like what my friend Erin is doing on her stats, so I’ll add:

Stories Published in 2017: 3

Next week that won’t get updated, but maybe in three weeks? That doesn’t seem too outrageous.

Now, I really do need to get to work. Have a lovely day, everyone!

Embarrassing Moments

I just realized I don’t know a family member’s last name. Mortifying. Easily fixed, though, by admitting I’m a derp and forgetful. It could be I never was told, to be honest, but why haven’t I asked before now? Well, it’s fixed now.

I finally finished up and published the previously unnamed short story I mentioned editing yesterday. I did that, got the cover done, and got it up for sale this morning. It’s listed under a pen name, so it’s advertised elsewhere.

The words I wrote on my current story, still unnamed, were minimal and written on my phone in bed. It’s a good way to assuage some guilt for not having written during the waking hours, to be honest. And I shouldn’t feel guilty because I did all the publishing work I should have done two months ago. It’s hard to write new material and publish at the same time. Publishing kind of needs all of my attention to be done correctly.

Next time something needs to be published, since I’ve already fallen off my “Write Every Day” wagon for the year several times, I’m just going to take the writing time off. Publication, except for the print proof, only takes a day or so of intense work. Maybe schedule a day or two of vacation to get it done because those are fabulous days to publish things.

And the bright side is if I use enough vacation days to publish stuff that I run out, I’m on the right track for making this my full-time gig!

Ha ha!

All the things!

Okay, not all the things, but a lot of the things.

I finally made the time to publish A Brief History yesterday, as I may have mentioned in yesterday’s post. (You also may have seen the book post I did. Spoilers, huh?)

I published the Create Space version first. Then I went and published the Kindle version, except apparently I quite forgot to run some sections through Grammarly, because there were 14 spelling errors, and nine of those were valid errors. So I fixed those in all the different manuscript versions (there are three), finished publishing the Kindle version, then went back and submitted the Create Space version again, which means a 24-hour wait for that to get approved.

Oops.

Then, I went off to Smashwords and got everything all ready before I realized I needed to create another Ghost Author account. So I did that, then redid all the work I’d lost (it’s not much – Smashwords is so very easy once you’ve got the formatting down).

Finally, Nook Press (Barnes & Noble). So for a while, I was publishing ebooks over there but with Space Cats, I just did the print. But then when I was fixing links on the Space Cats post, I realized both the ebook and the print book were showing up on BN.com. Turns out it must be that my Smashwords copy is linking with the print copy I did over there. That’s really great, actually, and saves me a bit of work. BN is already a pain because I need to reformat both my interior files and my cover files because their paper is a teeny bit lighter than Create Space.

After that, I didn’t have the energy to write much, but I did hack out a few words before and in bed.

Most of those words being the A Brief History post. And now that it’s up for sale, I need to decide whether I update every A to Z post with the book links, or whether I remove the posts altogether. I actually need opinions on that, for whoever reads this far. I’ll probably ask on FB too, so if you see that, don’t feel like you need to reply twice.

Thanks for reading! Today is editing on 003 (still has no title – tsk) so I can get that up for sale, too. It’s been too long. Bad Nicki.

Titles R Hard

I’m starting with words written during Insurgent last night. Now that it’s out of the way, I can ask a question that just popped into my head.

Getting the paperback ready takes longer. Why do I try to get that first when I could get the ebook up for sale and the print book could follow when I have it done? I suppose it’s to get my skills with print books down so print books are easier to do, and then everything could go up at the same time? I don’t know.

I’m talking about A Brief History right now, by the way. It’s been so long since April, I’m honestly not certain what state things are in. Maybe everything is perfect and ready and just need a quick once-over before putting up for sale? Or maybe there’s quite a bit of work yet to do. I just don’t remember.

This is why I shouldn’t wait so long after finishing before publishing. Ugh. I’m not even sure why it didn’t happen immediately. I’ve been carrying around the proof copy since it arrived, ready to do the proofing.

Oh well. I’m going to get it done now. Or at least look at it for the next three and a half hours or so. Then I’ll give the laptop back to the kids if they want it.

I’m off.

Still on vacation

Yeah, I may be physically home but my brain isn’t yet with me. I flaked on writing yesterday, and today too, it looks like. Still, the job is to report the good and the bad, and so that’s what I’ll do.

30 fiction words, 255 total words

I got both regularly scheduled blog posts done, and that feels good.

Yesterday was mostly a day of relaxing with the family anyway. We were all at home, reconnecting with the kitties. Some grocery shopping happened yesterday, too.

Today was just plain hot. I did laundry (probably should have done it yesterday but really wanted to spend the day with family), got some bank stuff done, and sweat. And bought some photo memory boxes for me, my grandma, and daughter. I’ll be sticking pens and desk supplies in mine. This should come as no surprise. (They were on sale for $2 each.)

Well, at any rate. I’m going to go read a blog or two more before bed. Maybe word some. Tomorrow, I might work on publishing. I think I’ve gotten everything set for A Brief History, although I’ve not talked about it for a while, and it’s probably way past time to get that up for sale. That, and there’s another story that needs a title, a cover, and some editing. Time to sow the field a bit more. Can’t have a harvest without planting.

Ah, hell. I left a plant in my car. Hope it’s not dead.

And I’ve made it back!

We had a lovely vacation and got to catch up with lots of family. Because there were two drivers, I had some time to write. (Although I didn’t really write a lot.)

1,516 fiction words, 1,894 total words, 8 days

I did do photo blogs every day, I didn’t bother with other blogs. I did write a bit over eight days, but that number really looks better as a daily total, don’t you think?

I also got an Idea over vacation. My idea is that soon, although I’m not sure how soon, I will start handwriting a novel, basing the idea off the cover of the journal that I’m going to write it in. I would like to write the entire story inside the covers of the journal, without running out of space or leaving a lot of blank pages.

Whether I publish or not (because I would have to retype it) or whether it just sits on my shelf as one of those novelty things (the cover of the notebook I’ve chosen is quite lovely by itself) is still up in the air. I may wait until November to do this, or I may not.

Exciting ideas from vacations!
