September!

I typed the title and then realized just how much stuff I need to do right now. Blarghl. Oh well!

September has arrived. I have a wedding anniversary this month shortly before the anniversary of quite a bit of terror in this country. There’s a three day weekend coming up tomorrow. I have some school supplies I need to get for Junior Youth. There’s another post due today, and and then I need to get the Income/Expenses post up on time this month instead of forgetting it completely like in August.

Speaking of August, why are sales so dismal in August? I haven’t got enough skin in the game to notice myself, but I’ve heard from others and I thought I’d drop the question here. I have two readers who might have input. I think the general theory is “end of summer”-itis, but there might be more to it.

Today I get to work in a different building than usual, and I’m out of both salad material and smoothie basics, so I think I’ll probably end up going out for lunch. I have a little bit of cash yet. I think there are bananas in my future. 🙂 Oh, and I need to get some of the ripe ones in the fridge soon. Oops…

Yesterday I was exhausted so I didn’t get much written. My mind was shot, but I made a decent stab at it in the morning.

I’ll do better today.

Oh, the other thing I did yesterday was more of a thing I didn’t do. There was a limited time opportunity that honestly, is probably exactly what I need. It was a good deal (compared to its regular pricing), but still a lot of money. I was on the fence, and just about to commit, and then I went online to check one of the (free) communities I’m already a part of. Almost immediately I realized that community was not only all I need (in the immediate present) but also my best tool. So I decided against the opportunity (ultimately it’s still available but at a higher price). There may be a time down the road when I go that route, but right now, I need to focus on other things.

Is good. I’m happy.

That’s not a typo, either

After such an astounding writing day yesterday, I’d like to report another such day today. But when I spent most of yesterday researching and publishing, I was only able to squeeze a few words in at the end before I collapsed last night.

So while it’s nowhere near the 5,000+ from Sunday, I’m satisfied.

Yesterday was the Youth’s first day of school. Elder Youth received news that many school supplies won’t be needed. Calculators for math will be assigned, and the school is really trying to go paperless, so hardly any other notebooks/folders/binders will be needed at all. My pocketbook is thrilled at this.

I haven’t heard as much from Junior Youth, but as it’s the same school district it’s not unreasonable to expect the same from that grade as well. They are still involved with tours and learning the layout of the new building, so perhaps I’ll hear in the next couple of days.

I did manage to forget “first day of school” photos. It’s not the first time, nor certainly the last, that such things have been neglected. I’ll make up for it today.

Other goals for today include another short story, although probably not all of it in one go. That will need to be reserved for weekends unless I learn to write faster. Technically a repeat is possible in a little over two hours, but I’m not skilled at making decisions about the story that quickly yet.

Soon. I will practice, and I will get there soon.

Sunday, the Day Before

I have a touch of anxiety on my children’s behalf for tomorrow, the first day of the thing that shall not be named. Junior Youth is looking forward to it least, certainly. Elder Youth is looking forward to it a bit more than that, but still not to be interpreted as excitement. My anxiety stems from what will happen when they get home. Will they need tons of supplies? Will they make friends?

I shouldn’t worry, but I am rather good at it.

Words. I wrote words yesterday.

I was studying some more, reading and trying to learn from the experience of others. And on a similar note, I was given access to Lynda.com on Friday, so there are all sorts of stuff to learn there, too. Know any classes I should take?

Today I haven’t written anything yet, but I did go grocery shopping. I thought I was doing good until I got everything rung up at my last stop and found out that I had done the exact opposite of “good”. I had done poorly, as far as my checkbook was concerned. Tsk.

I’ll get better at it, eventually. Hopefully, I managed to purchase enough items that next week, there will be less that is needed. Fingers crossed.

Homework

I’m trying to learn a new skill, and it’s involving a lot of homework. So just as soon as I’m ready to start giving it a shot, I end up needing to do more research.

Just as the kids go back to school, so do I. It’s actually kind of fun.

I’m just getting laundry done today, with a bit of grocery shopping tossed in. I’m looking forward to a relaxing-ish day tomorrow, too. And then we’ll just be a week away from Labor Day, and an extra day of the weekend for the whole family.

Very fine.

Just a quick note

My attention is pulled in all sorts of directions with school starting next week. It’s a nice problem to have. Busses, extra-curricular stuffs, homework, supplies…

Okay, I’m guessing none of that will actually be fun, per se. But Routine, man.

Routine.

Not a stellar day but I plugged along. I find myself getting tired earlier but not waking up earlier to compensate for lost productivity. I just need to make the decision to do it.

Routine, man! I love me my routines!

Recovery

10 fiction words, 254 total words

Yesterday I left the house early so I could get to work early so I could leave work early so I could write at our writing group early so when we left early to see the movie to celebrate my friend’s birthday I would have some words in.

So I got some words in, but not much, because Birthdays. It’s all good.

I was also up too late, and I ate a lot of food I shouldn’t have, but also Birthdays.

So this morning I slept in, and now I’m having coffee and food that’s better for me and I’m enjoying more. I should be perked up back to normal soon.

Have a lovely Wednesday!

A lovely trend

I had another good word day, although most of the words had to be written in the evening.

It was also a solar eclipse. I was at work and didn’t take any opportunities to watch any portion of it. Had it been sunny instead of overcast, I may have gone outside to look at the shadows from the trees. There were other reasons I didn’t watch (although the availability of a pair of solar eclipse “glasses” were not one), but none that I regret.

So, back to words.

I definitely started a new short. It should be around 10,000 by the time I’m done, which means I should have it done by the end of the week if I don’t screw around.

That, however, is not the speed I should be aiming for. Ideally, in the genre I’m writing this in, I should be aiming for 4,000-word stories every day. It’s not a speed I can sustain yet (I have no doubt that I could meet it, though).

Someday. Maybe.

I didn’t work on my longer work at all, which is a little bit of a disappointment to me, but I know it’ll be there when I’m done with this. This will be quick. I’ll get back to the longer piece on the weekend, and then maybe try to push out another short one.

The more you sow, the more you reap. That’s what I’m going with, here.

Wish me luck.

Week of Firsts and Bests

974 fiction words, 1,231 total words

Vehicle in the shop aside, it’s been a good week. I have made it my best week for words, and now I have made it my first 10K word week with yesterday’s writing. The only thing left is to write more than 2,613 words today to polish everything off.

These things come in threes, you know.

There’s not much to add from yesterday. I went to bed early and woke up about 10 hours later. I was quite tired, so that worked out well.

Today is writing day. I think I’m going to put a half hour into my current story, and then give the rest of my day to a follow-up short story to one I wrote in April under a pen name. One of Heinlein’s rules is that you must finish what you start, and so far I’ve done that all year. I don’t want to ruin that now.

Simmering Hunger

That subject reads like a romance novel. It’s better than my first subject, though, that was just “Waaah.” Yeah, I don’t know.

So it’s laundry day. It’s taking more time lately because we’re also doing my grandmother’s laundry. I woke at 7 this morning, though, and we got a nice and early start. Hopefully, that will help and we’ll get back home while people are still awake and able to help with bringing things in.

Yesterday was a good day, right up until it wasn’t. I had an amazing smoothie experience for my morning snack, I had a good lunch, and I was going to go to a friend’s party.

And then the time came for the party, and I was scared (I have a little bit of social anxiety), and then I remembered I was supposed to do something with Elder Youth that evening, and he’d been really excited about it, so I was not only scared but sad that I’d disappointed him.

I told my friend I couldn’t come to the party and went home to find a minor plumbing issue in process. I helped deal with that, then did the thing with Elder Youth (which was fun.

My day ended with a considerable amount of stress over household finances, and yeah. Quite ugh.

But, I wrote a few words:

1,045 fiction words, 1,382 total words

And I blogged over at the other place (veg*ism).

And I just figured out that I hadn’t had my spreadsheet set up correctly for the past few days, and so I wrote a few more “total words” over the past day or three than I actually reported. (It’s okay – it’s the fiction words that really count.)

That was a completely rambly post, but I think I’m done now. Today has been better so far, although I’m starving right now. I’m going to go visit a place with lots of produce and buy a bit of food. Kale, since I’m out now. Bananas. Sweet potatoes. And maybe that’s it I think. Parsley, I think, because I’d like to make some Tabouleh. I’m armed with my mom’s recipe.

Sleepy

I’m much more tired this morning than I have been in a while. Maybe sluggish is a better word for it. Yesterday I only had 12 oz of coffee – would that be it? Unknown.

I was sluggish and tired last night as well, which is why I didn’t get as many words as I have the past two days.

392 fiction words, 679 total words

I woke early yesterday, too. I didn’t take my morning half hour to write, though. I had made the smoothie and spent some extra time getting ready, and then headed into work early. There was an errand smack in the middle of my day, so I wanted to get a jump-start on work so it didn’t feel so odd going in for less than two hours, then leaving right away.

Today, though. Today I can take the time.

Oh, I’ve been adding less and less sugar and creamer to my coffee every morning in hopes that I can eliminate them both from my routine. It will make coffee prep faster, for one, and also the reason I switched to coffee was less sugar. It would be great if I could stop adding sugar to the thing I’m getting less sugar from. Hehehe.
